User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Top Quality
I bought this unit at the Circuit City closing sale on the next to last day at a great price. This is truly a Top of the line Blu-ray player. The up convert of regular DVD’s is remarkable. I understand that the processer for this player is more powerful then the Sony play station III. If its quality you want, this is it.

1 Star Great model two years ago
I bought the DV BD606 as a fan of almost all onkyo products. I have a 906 and their hd dvd player, which are both top notch. I was very disappointed by this funai re-badge. SD upconversion was fair and not nearly as good as a pioneer or samsung 2550. It is not profile 2.0, does not decode the hd audio codecs and lacks any other novelty like Netflix Streaming.

5 Stars Very Pleased
I am an Onkyo fan from way back. I ordered the BD696 and the TX806. Deliver was prompt. I have a 60″ Sony SXRD rear projection TV and JBL speakers, including a pair of 35 year old L100 Studio Monitors.

The picture and sound on the Blu Ray disk of Australia and on standard DVD’s was outstanding. Very pleased. I had a friend who is an expert make all the connections and do all of the settings. It was money well spent. I think a proper set-up is critical in order to get maximum performance.

1 Star Don’t buy!
My “don’t buy” rating is not because…

It’s too expensive for a unit that lacks internal Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoders and 7.1-channel analog audio outputs (anyway, you can get around this if you, like I, already own an Onkyo receiver with high-resolution audio decoding)

It fails to support digital-media formats (WMA, JPEG, and Divx) like many other Blu-ray players

Most critically, it’s video quality is not up to par (a bit soft) – when others say it looks great, they must be comparing it to their old DVD player (or, at least an old Blu-ray player, which were all beat by a PS3)

(at least it has an SD slot, but so do others that cost less, it upscales well, but who really cares since we all already own a good upscaling DVD player, and it’s on the quicker side of loading a disk, but they’re all slow)

BUT, IT DOESN’T HAVE AN ETHERNET PORT FOR FIRMWARE UPDATES!!!

(this is unacceptable – important update due this year – all HD-DVD players had an enet port and the PS3 can update over the Internet… this means no BD 2.0 support for the DV-BD606, which is not critical in itself… yet)

Stuff-TV says, “We’re certain you can spend your money more wisely.”

They’re talking (IMHO) about Sony, Samsung, and esp Panasonic.

UPDATE: If you want to spend this kind of money, buy a OPPO BDP-83 Blu-ray Disc Player with SACD & DVD-Audio and get a “real” player (best, IMHO).

5 Stars Extremely Pleased with this Blu-Ray Player
Outstanding player. Picture quality for Blu-ray is as good as it gets and the up-conversion on DVD’s is excellent…cannot ask for better. Onkyo must have used some magic here; since it has played every Blu-ray and DVD put in it. Have played well over 100 DVD’s, including DVD-R’s. As for Blu-ray…around 60 to 70 – All four Rambo’s, Die Hard’s, three Matrix and both Underworld movies, Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Wanted, Indiana Jones Kingdom, Fifth Element, Ghost Rider, Dirty Dozen, Eraser, Rocky Balboa, Stargate…etc. All played perfectly without any firmware update. As for BD Live 2.0 … simply put; it is another way of control and to send commercials.
